Back in the fall of 1975 in I was living and working in the Loedgepole and Pembina Oil Fields, near Drayton Valley, Alberta. I worked for a large American Petroleum company, and did everything from repacking well heads, to electronics and telemetry maintanince. It was quite a good job I'd say. It wasn't without its dangers of course, sour gas and explosions have killed many before and since. It was often hard work too, many a time I was pulling on 48 inch pipe wrenches with snipes or pipefitting a gas station to add telemetry equipment. I was hired for my electronics knowledge, but really any Grade 8 electronics student could have done the job. Easy and honest money I always thought.

 

Testing Your Salesperson

Don't you just hate it when you walk into a store hoping to find a knowledgeable salesperson with outdoor experience, but instead find a high school kid who is working there so he can get the store discount? I�ve worked at an outdoors specialty store, so I know that most salespeople are very active in their outdoor pursuits and know their stuff inside and out. If you are new to backpacking, you often rely on the knowledge of the sales staff to lead you in the right direction. Without the proper recommendations, you can end up spending a lot of money on inappropriate gear. I thought that I would come up with a little way to "test" your salespeople to see how valuable their advice is.

It's a clear, crisp morning and the scenery is breath-taking. Your legs feel solid as you begin to hike on your annual backpacking trip with old college friends. Beginning In The Backcountry: A Guide For No-Timers and First-Timers

For me, it started on a family vacation to the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. To keep me occupied for the eight-hour drive back home, my parents bought me a copy of Harvey Manning's Backpacking: One Step at a Time. By the time we got back to the flatlands I knew, even at 12 years old, that no matter how weird it all got I would always have a place, and it would always be outside.

What level of training is required to participate in the campaign?
Our hiking trails – for participation   it is enough to be able to walk. All the rest (putting up a tent, building a fire and telling incredible stories) can be learned already on the march. Special equipment and equipment is not used - we just walk on mountain trails.

Why do I winter camp?

For me it’s a natural extension of my snowshoeing day trips. It also seemed a shame for me to have a six-month hiatus every year from my favorite activities, which are backpacking and backcountry camping. I found that as I was going to higher alpine destinations during the other times of the year, I was encountering winter-like conditions and if I could do this, I could certainly winter camp.
