High villages of the Carpathians

The high villages of the Carpathians are Hutsul and Boyko settlements deep in the mountains, scattered along valleys at 550-1400 m. They are both gateways to the peaks (Dzembronia and Verkhovyna for Chornohora; Bystrytsia and Osmoloda for the Gorgany; Yasinia and Kvasy for Svydovets) and centres of living culture: shepherd huts, wooden churches, brynza cheese. Below are a map, a summary table of altitude, population and year of first mention, and tours starting in these villages.

FAQ

Which is the highest village in the Carpathians?
There is no single answer - it depends how you count. By absolute height the highest permanent settlement is Verkhniy Yalovets in Bukovyna (upper edge ~1410 m). By average height the almost-abandoned Vypchyna leads (~1240 m: a few houses and a church). The highest PERMANENTLY inhabited place with real residents is Sarata (~1185 m, about a dozen people). Dzembronia, often called the highest, spreads from ~800 to ~1100 m: its upper hamlets are among the highest, but the "highest village" title is more touristic than official. And the highest settlement of all is the Dragobrat ski resort (~1300-1400 m), though it is seasonal.
Which village is the best base for hiking?

It depends on the massif: Bystrytsia and Osmoloda for the Gorgany; Yasinia, Kvasy and Lazeshchyna for Svydovets, Drahobrat and Chornohora; Verkhovyna for Chornohora and the Hryniava mountains.

How do you get to these villages?

Trains reach Yasinia, Kvasy and Lazeshchyna (the Rakhiv-Ivano-Frankivsk line) and Uzhok. The rest are reached by bus or transfer from Rakhiv, Nadvirna or Mizhhiria; deeper in, by off-road vehicle.

What is interesting about these villages besides the mountains?

Their living Hutsul and Boyko culture: wooden churches, huts with fresh brynza cheese, museums (Kolochava has the "Old Village" open-air museum), crafts and festivals.

Is there any dwelling higher than the villages?
Yes. The highest building in the Ukrainian Carpathians is the restored "White Elephant" observatory on Pip Ivan Chornohirskyi (2002 m). Religious structures also stand above the villages: a chapel on Radul polonyna (~1540 m), churches and monasteries on the meadows. And every summer the shepherds' polonyna huts come alive - seasonal "settlements" up to ~1500 m, where cattle graze and brynza cheese is made. So permanent villages above ~1200 m barely exist, but temporary and special high-mountain dwellings are plentiful.
