FAQ
Where does the name "Gorgany" come from?
Two versions: from the Romanian gorgan ("mound, barrow"), or from "horhotaty" - the rumble of stones settling on the slopes. The stone screes themselves are also called gorgany.
How do you get to the Gorgany?
The main gateways are Osmoloda and Bystrytsia from the Prykarpattia side, and Nadvirna and Yaremche for the eastern Gorgany. By public transport: train or bus to Nadvirna or Yaremche, then local services or a transfer; deeper in, only on foot.
What are the Gorgany made of (geology)?
The massif is built of hard sandstones that weather into sharp stone screes (hrehoty) on ridges and slopes, giving it steep asymmetric slopes and jagged rocky summits.
How are the Gorgany different from other ridges?
They are the wildest and hardest massif for hiking: almost no meadows, with steep slopes, stone screes and dense dwarf pine. Despite moderate elevations (~1400-1500 m on average) the terrain is very rugged and navigation is tricky.
Which rivers rise in the Gorgany?
The Limnytsia (one of Europe’s cleanest rivers), the Bystrytsia Nadvirnianska and the Mizunka rise here; to the east, tributaries of the Prut. The waters belong to the Dniester and Danube basins.
What about the flora and fauna of the Gorgany?
The Gorgany are famous for relict Swiss stone pine forests and untouched old-growth woods. Brown bear, lynx and capercaillie live here; the fauna is rich precisely because the massif is so little developed.
Is there a reserve? Can you hike there?
The core is the "Gorgany" Nature Reserve (about 5000 ha) protecting the stone pine; mass tourism there is completely banned and scientific access is by permit with a ranger only. Outside the reserve the trails are open.
