What kind of monastery is this and where is it?
The Assumption Cave Monastery is an active Orthodox men's monastery near Bakhchisaray in the Crimea, carved out of the Mariam-dere rock (Mary's Ravine). Now it is the largest monastery on the peninsula in terms of the number of brothers.
How old is he?
Historians disagree here: according to one version, the monastery was founded by Byzantine monks back in the 8th century during the iconoclasm, according to another - as far back as the 15th century. So no one will tell you the exact number, but this monastery is undoubtedly old.
What can be seen here?
The Assumption cave church, cut out of the rock, several more churches and chapels (in particular, St. Mark, Constantine and Elena), a holy spring and an old cemetery, where the dead from the Crimean War are buried.
What is historically interesting about this monastery?
After the fall of the Crimean Khanate in 1778, Greek Christians were brought out from here under the protection of Suvorov together with the miraculous icon. During Soviet times, in 1921, the monastery was closed and destroyed, and returned to the church only in 1993. Since 2015, it has been a monument of cultural heritage.
