The mountain huts along the Laugavegur - Iceland's most popular multi-day trek - shelter hikers from rain, wind and cold between Landmannalaugar and Þórsmörk. Beds sell out months ahead, so book early and only from north to south. Do I need to book a hut in advance?
Yes, ideally several months ahead, because summer beds go fast. FÍ only books huts from north to south, from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk.
What is provided in the hut and what should I bring?
You get a mattress on the bunk, a gas kitchen with utensils and a toilet. Bring your own sleeping bag, food, towel and cash; none of the huts have electricity or Wi-Fi, and water is often cold only.
How much does a night in a hut cost?
FÍ huts charge about 17,000 ISK per person per night (2026 season); the Útivist hut Fimmvörðuskáli is similar. Camping next to a hut is markedly cheaper. You can pay by card or cash, but keep cash as a backup.
Tent or hut?
A tent is cheaper and there is always room, but the wind at Álftavatn and on the Fimmvörðuháls pass can be brutal. A hut is warmer and drier, but beds must be booked well ahead.
What do hikers complain about most?
About cold and fog at Hrafntinnusker (the highest hut, no shower), queues for the kitchen and toilet at peak times, and snoring in the shared dormitories. Showers cost extra - bring a card or coins and cash, because the signal on the trail is weak.
Can you book the Laugavegur huts night by night, or only as a whole package?
There are two operators with different rules. Ferðafélag Íslands (FÍ) runs five huts - Landmannalaugar, Hrafntinnusker, Álftavatn, Hvanngil, Emstrur - and books them ONLY from north to south, in the direction of the trek. Most huts can be taken individually by choosing an arrival and departure date, but Emstrur cannot be booked on its own - it is only available as part of a route, and you have to email [email protected] to ask about a spot there. Early in the season FÍ often releases fixed 5-night itineraries first and opens single nights only later, so it pays to sign up for the booking-alert list. The sixth hut, Þórsmörk (Langidalur), also belongs to FÍ. Fimmvörðuháls on the pass of the same name is a different operator, Útivist, with its own booking and its own terms, so those nights are reserved separately from FÍ. Tip: plan your nights in sequence north to south and book far in advance, because summer spaces sell out fast.
