Landmannalaugar Hut
The Ferðafélag Íslands hut at Landmannalaugar is a large two-storey building sleeping 78, the usual starting point for Laugavegur hikers. A roomy service house with toilets and showers serves both the hut and the campground, and a warden lives in an adjacent cabin throughout the season. In winter access is only by specially equipped super-jeeps or snowmobile, or via a 30 km cross-country ski route. For summer 2026 a parking reservation is mandatory for cars.
When is the hut open?
On average the warden-staffed season runs from about June 20 to September 15, with exact dates depending each year on snow and road conditions. In winter the hut is technically reachable, but only for well-equipped groups with specialised vehicles.
Is there a shop and phone signal here?
Landmannalaugar is the most developed point on the route: it has a well-known kiosk-shop set up in a converted bus, where you can buy snacks and small gear, and there is mobile signal. Further south there is effectively neither, so hikers stock up here.
How do you book a bed?
Beds are booked on the FÍ website, and it is worth doing well before the season - in summer the hut fills quickly. Without a reservation a place is not guaranteed. FÍ books huts only from north to south, so Landmannalaugar is usually the first night of the route.
