What is in the Hrafntinnusker hut?
It is a simple high-altitude hut sleeping 52, with a kitchen that has cold running water. You sleep on mattresses in a sleeping bag. Conditions are minimal: no showers, no shop, no luxuries, just a roof, warmth and basic facilities at the highest overnight point on the Laugavegur.
Is there a shower, and what about water?
There are no showers at all - they simply do not exist in this area. Drinking water is available: the kitchen has cold running water. Plan your hygiene without a shower, and day visitors pay a facility fee to use the toilets and outdoor area.
How do you reach the hut?
On foot only. There is effectively no road for vehicles - the barely passable dirt track is used only occasionally to bring in supplies. This is the first overnight after Landmannalaugar, about 12 km of climbing through coloured rhyolite and snowfields.
When is the hut open?
On average staffed from about June 25 to September 16. In winter the hut is closed and locked. Because it sits above 1000 m the snow lingers longer, so early and late in the season the weather can be harsh even in summer.
Why is Hrafntinnusker considered the harshest hut?
It is the highest overnight on the Laugavegur, at 1100 m, among steaming fumaroles and snow that does not melt even in summer. It is colder and windier than the other huts, with no shower, no shop and no reliable signal. The most dangerous stretch in bad weather starts here, so an early departure is advised when the forecast is poor.
How much is a night and how do you book?
A night costs about 17000 kr. Booking is through the FÍ website and, as along the whole trail, only in the north-to-south direction. Places are few, so in peak season they should be reserved well ahead.
