Emstrur (Botnar)
Three identical cabins of 20 beds each at 465 m - the last stop before the mighty Markarfljót canyon. There are gas kitchens, a shared toilet and a paid shower, and the campsite terraces down into a little valley below.

What is at the Emstrur (Botnar) hut?
It is three huts of 20 places each, 60 people in total, with bunk beds. All are equipped with gas stoves, utensils and cold running water. Showers and toilets are in a separate house. The site is also called Botnar.
Is there a shower, water and signal here?
Showers are in the toilet house for a fee, and cold running drinking water is in all the huts. Mobile signal is weak: to catch it you usually have to climb the hill above the hut.
How do you reach Emstrur?
On foot along the trail or, in summer, by 4x4 on a track that branches off the Emstruleið road. The hut sits in a remote part of the route between glaciers, so driving in is difficult and requires experience.
When is the hut open?
On average from about June 25 to September 18. Out of season the hut does not operate. It is the last high overnight before the descent into the green Þórsmörk valley.
Why can't Emstrur be booked on its own?
It is the only FÍ hut on the trail that cannot be taken as a single night through the online system - it is available only as part of a route. If you need a place here outside a package, you must email [email protected] directly. A rented tent at Emstrur likewise cannot be booked separately.
How much is a night?
As at the other FÍ huts, a night costs about 17000 kr. Because of the package rule and the small number of places in the three cabins, you need to book well in advance.
