FAQFrequently asked questions

What is Skógafoss and how big is it?

This is one of the largest waterfalls in Iceland: water falls from a height of 60 meters with a width of about 25 meters. The Skouga River falls from the ledge of the old shoreline - the sea once splashed here.

Where is it and how to get there?

South of Iceland, along the former coast. The waterfall is right next to the road, so it's easy to get there - there is no need for separate difficult approaches.

Can you go upstairs?

Yes, there is a path with stairs to the top on the eastern side. From there, the trekking route begins through the Fimmvjörðurhulls pass between two glaciers - Eyjafjällajökull and Mjördalsjökull.

When is the best time to go to see a rainbow?

Due to the constant water curtain on a sunny day, you can almost always see a rainbow here - sometimes even a double one. So catch clear weather and take something that is not afraid of splashes.

Is there a legend?

They say the first settler hid a treasure chest in a cave behind the waterfall. Locals allegedly found it, but managed to grab only the ring on the side before the chest disappeared. The ring was then given to the church - at least that's what they say.
