Álftavatn Hut

Attraction 📍 Iceland

The Álftavatn hut is a pair of Ferðafélag Íslands buildings sleeping 72 beside the lake of the same name, the second major overnight on the Laugavegur. Both buildings have cold running water, and the toilet house has paid showers, which is uncommon on the route. There is mobile signal here, and you can arrive on foot along the trail or by 4x4 on road F210.

FAQFrequently asked questions

What is at the Álftavatn hut?
It is two huts sleeping 72 by the lake, with kitchens and cold running water in both. You sleep on mattresses in your own sleeping bag. A separate toilet house with showers adds to the comfort, and there is a campground for tents nearby.
Are there showers and phone signal here?
Yes to both. The toilet house has showers for a fee, and there is mobile signal here, which is a notable advantage on the Laugavegur. Cold running drinking water is available in both huts.
How do you get to Álftavatn?
On foot along the trail from Hrafntinnusker, or by 4x4 on the mountain road Fjallabaksleið syðri (F210) with fords. In season highland buses on the Landmannalaugar - Þórsmörk line stop nearby, so you can join or leave here without walking the whole trek.
When is the hut open?
On average staffed from about June 25 to September 17, depending on road and snow conditions. Outside that window the hut is only rented by prior request to [email protected].
What makes the lakeside stay special?
Álftavatn sits right above the water among green hills, making it one of the most scenic overnights on the route and a natural halfway point. After a long day across snowfields, hikers arrive to an open view, a shower and level ground - a striking contrast with harsh Hrafntinnusker.
How do you book and what does it cost?
A night costs about 17000 kr, booked on the FÍ website in the north-to-south direction. Because the lake is popular and places are limited, book well ahead.
