Is there a shower and water?
Yes, the separate toilet house has showers for a fee. Drinking water is cold running water in the kitchen. This makes Hvanngil a handy alternative to crowded Álftavatn for those wanting a quieter night with the same basic facilities.
How do you reach Hvanngil?
On foot along the Laugavegur trail or by 4x4 on the road Fjallabaksleið syðri (F210). Several unbridged rivers must be crossed on the way, so driving in yourself is only for experienced drivers in serious off-road vehicles.
When is the hut open?
On average from about June 25 to September 17, depending on snow and general conditions. Winter rental is possible by prior request.
How does Hvanngil differ from Álftavatn?
Hvanngil lies a little further along the trail, in a sheltered green hollow, and is usually quieter and less crowded than lakeside Álftavatn. Some use it as an extra overnight to break the long stretch to Emstrur; the facilities are similar but the atmosphere is more intimate.
