What is Torres del Paine and why do people go there?
This is a granite massif in Chilean Patagonia with three famous towers, which gave it its name. The highest South Tower reaches about 2,500 m, and the highest peak of the entire range, Cerro Pine Grande, reaches 2,884 m.
How to get there?
The main gate is the city of Punta Arenas with the airport; from there to the massif about 280 km to the north. It is almost 1,960 km from Santiago, that is, one cannot do without a flight to the south.
What is worth seeing in the park?
In addition to the three towers - the jagged peaks of Cuernos del Paine, the peak of Paine Grande and Lake Lago Peoe. The trails and part of the campsites are maintained by the Chilean Forest Service, so the routes are completely passable.
Is the weather difficult there?
Patagonia is famous for its harsh and changeable weather, so be prepared for wind and surprises even in summer. Layered clothing and a reserve of patience are your friends.
Any interesting facts?
The word "Paine" means "blue" in the Tehuelche Indian language. Since 1978, the park has had the status of a UNESCO biosphere reserve and receives about 250,000 visitors every year, and the granite towers themselves were formed approximately 12 million years ago.
