FAQFrequently asked questions

What kind of church is this and where is it?

The Foros Church (officially the Church of the Resurrection of Christ) stands on the Red Rock near Foros in the Crimea, at an altitude of 412 meters above sea level. It was built in 1892, so it is much older than most of the tourists who come to photograph it.

Why was it erected here at all?

The money was given by industrialist A.G. Kuznetsov - in memory of the fact that Emperor Alexander III and his family survived the railway disaster of 1888. The church was consecrated on October 4, 1892, among the guests was the arch-procurator of the Victory Synod.

What is her look and style?

A mixture of neo-Byzantine and pseudo-Russian style with a bunch of domes modeled on old Russian wooden temples. Inside - mosaics from the Italian workshop Societa Musiva and paintings by St. Petersburg artists.

And what happened to her in Soviet times?

In 1924, the church was closed: the crosses were removed, the frescoes painted over, the priest was sent to Siberia. Later, there was a tourist cafe-restaurant here, and then the building simply fell into disrepair until 1992.

Is it worth going there now?

After the restoration in 2002, the church became a popular place for weddings and one of the most picturesque spots on the coast. The view from a height of 412 meters is worth it - just keep your cap on, the wind has its own mood on the rock.
