Chornorichensky kanyon
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Chornorichensky Canyon?
This is a narrow gorge about 12 kilometers long, which the Black River has cut through the Upper Jurassic limestones over millions of years. It is sometimes called a miniature Crimean Daryal due to its cramped conditions and steep walls.
Where is it and where does it begin?
The canyon lies on the western edge of the Main Range of the Crimean Mountains, in the Balaklava District. It begins near the Kyzyl-Kaya rock on the edge of the Baydar valley, and ends near the village of Chornorichenskyi.
How to pass the canyon and is it difficult?
The path is littered with stone blocks, so don't expect an easy walk - it's more convenient to walk along the left bank from the Baidar valley. Take reliable shoes, because you will have to climb a lot.
When is it better to go, and when is it not worth it?
Go in dry weather: during the rains, the narrow gorge is dangerous because the water in the river rises quickly. A warm season without showers is the smartest choice.
Is this a protected area?
Yes, the canyon was recognized as a natural monument as early as 1947, and since 1974 it has had the status of a nature reserve. Two kilometers also fall into the protection zone of the Chornorichen Reservoir, so behave politely.
