Foros Church

Foros Church

The Church of the Resurrection stands on a cliff above Foros, about 400 metres over the Black Sea. It was built in 1892 with money from the tea merchant Alexander Kuznetsov. The occasion was the 1888 train crash at Borki: Alexander III's train left the rails, and the carriage of the imperial family stayed on the track.

Nikolai Chagin designed it in a Byzantine manner. Antonio Salviati made the mosaics. The murals are linked with Alexei Korzukhin, Vladimir Makovsky and Nikolai Sverchkov. After the revolution the church was closed. A canteen for tourists used the building until 1969, and then it stood empty. In 1992 it was returned to the parish.

Lower on the slope is the state dacha where Mikhail Gorbachev was held in August 1991, during the coup in Moscow. After 1991 it remained a state residence. Crimea is temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation, so it is not a residence of the President of Ukraine. For now it is not a place for tourism.
