FAQFrequently asked questions

Is Everest Base Camp one camp or two?

Actually, there are two of them. The southern one lies in Nepal at an altitude of 5364 m, the northern one is in Tibet at an altitude of 5150 m. Tourists usually mean the southern one.

Why is this camp needed at all?

This is a base for those who are going to climb the highest mountain on the planet. Here, climbers acclimatize and gradually get used to the altitude, so that mountain sickness does not knock them down on the way up.

How to get there?

The southern camp can only be reached on foot (well, or on yaks) - cars will not get there. They usually start from Lukla, then two days to Namche Bazar, two more days to Dingboche and then to the camp itself.

How popular is this route?

The southern camp gathers several thousand people every year, so you will definitely not be alone there. The northern one is quieter: permission from the Chinese authorities once had to be issued there as well.

Is it possible to drive to the northern camp?

Only in summer - the rest of the year the road is not for cars. So even on the Tibetan side, it is usually impossible to do without a section on foot.
