Chukhung
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Chhukung and at what height is it?
This is a small village with lodges in the Khumbu region of Nepal, at an altitude of 4730 meters. Historically, there were no permanent residents here - the place was used for grazing yaks until climbers came here.
Why go there?
Chhukung is a convenient acclimatization point for those heading to Everest Base Camp and the starting base for climbing Island Peak (Imja-Tse). From here they climb to Chhukung-Ri (5,546 m) - a trekking peak that does not even require a permit.
What can be seen around?
The valley is surrounded by serious peaks: Lhotze, Nuptze, Baruntze, Ama-Dablam, as well as several glaciers. That is, the landscape here is not for the faint of heart.
Where to spend the night?
There are about nine lodges in the village - all of them are designed for climbers going to Island Peak. Don't expect luxury, but you are guaranteed a roof, hot food and the company of like-minded people.
How to get there?
Chhukung lies on the left branch of the Imja-Khola river, within the usual tracks of the Khumbu. The way there is part of the walking route from the side of Namche Bazaar and Dingboche, so you will have to get there on foot and not in one day.
