What is Horak Shep and at what height is it?
This is a tiny settlement on the edge of the frozen sandy bottom of the lake, at an altitude of 5164 meters. The name translates as "dead crows" - there is no vegetation here at all, so the hint is clear.
Why do tourists go there?
Horak Shep is the last point where trekkers are allowed to spend the night before Everest Base Camp. From here it is about 1.5-2.5 hours of walking to the base camp.
How to get there?
Most follow the standard track from Lukla through Namche Bazar, Tengboche, Pangboche, Dingboche and Lobuche. There are no faster detours - only feet.
When is it better to go and where to spend the night?
The best seasons are March-April and October-November. There are loggias in the settlement, but in the peak season they fill up instantly, and in winter most are closed due to the cold.
What is worth seeing nearby?
From here climb to Kala Pattar (5550 m) - the best view of Everest without the need for a climbing permit. Interesting fact: in 1952, the Swiss kept their base camp here until they moved it closer to the mountain.
