Dzhemagat
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Djemagat?
This is a valley (gorge) of the mountain river of the same name in the Caucasus, in Karachay-Cherkessia. The river itself is short - about 4 km, the right tributary of Teberda, but the valley cut by it gave the name to the entire area.
Where is it and how to get there?
Dzhemagat flows into the Teberda opposite the northern outskirts of the resort town of Teberda, so it logically becomes the starting point. From there, head up the river valley - the orientation is simple, because it flows mainly to the northwest.
At what height is it?
The mouth of the river is approximately 1,270 m above sea level, and it begins at the confluence of two streams - Horalikolu and Nasalikolu - somewhere at 1,510 m. That is, the walk goes along the mountain heights, not on the plain.
Where did the name come from?
Karachay-Balkar "Jamagāt" is translated as "community, people, world". So the name is more about people than about geography - although it is the river that carries it.
What is interesting in the valley?
In the middle course, the river branches into several branches, so the landscape here is not boring. The valley leads deep into the mountains near Teberda - a familiar route for those who came to the local resort for the mountains, and not for a sunbed.
