Fortress Chembalo

Fortress Chembalo

Historic site 📍 Crimea

Harpsichord - the ruins of the Genoese fortress above Balaklava Bay, on Mount Castro. The Genoese began to build it in the middle of the 14th century to keep under control the entrance to the convenient harbor, and for several centuries it became one of the key fortifications of the southwestern coast.

Today, the fortress remains walls, towers and fragments of buildings on a steep rocky slope that cuts straight to the sea. The place is more about the scenery and the atmosphere than about the museum gloss: you climb the path above the bay and look at Balaklava from above.

Take reliable shoes - the slopes here are steep and the stones are slippery.
