Mika-Mare (Mica Mare)

Mika-Mare is one of the peaks of the Marmara massif, which tourists affectionately call the Hutsul Alps. The mountain stands on the very border of Ukraine with Romania, in the Rakhiv district of Transcarpathia, and reaches about 1,815 meters.

The name comes from Romanian (Mică-Mare) and literally translates as Small-Big, a kind of mountain game of contradictions. Mika-Mare is conveniently strung on a ridge between the famous Pip-Ivan Marmarosky and other peaks of the massif, so it is rarely an end in itself - more often it is a link of a multi-day hike.

Rock ridges and open valleys offer wide views here, but also demand respect: the Marmaros are steep and rocky. The best time is from late spring to early autumn, when the trails are dry and the ridge is not hidden in the clouds.
