Day by dayItinerary
1 Day 1. Ivano-Frankivsk, Delove village, Bila Potik River
The group meets at 10 a.m. at the railway station in Ivano-Frankivsk. We then take a bus to Delove village, where the instructor obtains passes at the border post. After that we shoulder our packs and walk upstream along the Bila Potik River for a couple of hours. Overnight in tents in a clearing.
Distance: 3 km. Elevation gain: 200 m.
2 Day 2. Mount Polonynka, Strumky mountain meadow
Through the forest we reach the Romanian border in the area of Mount Polonynka (1,625 m). We do not climb to the top but traverse around it, heading towards the Strumky mountain meadow, where we will spend the night with a view of the Bila Potik canyon and neighbouring Mount Shcherban.
Distance: 10 km. Elevation gain: 1,000 m.
3 Day 3. Mount Pop-Ivan Marmarosy (1,937 m), Chornyi Hrun tract
The forest gives way to thickets of zherep, a coniferous alpine dwarf shrub. We head towards Mount Shcherban. From the pass, on a clear day, you can see the villages on the Romanian side. We climb to the highest peak of Marmarosy, Mount Pop-Ivan (1,937 m). This is where the wonders of the Hutsul Alps are concentrated: snowfields, cirques and all the rest of that rugged beauty. We spend the night in the Chornyi Hrun tract.
Distance: 6 km. Elevation gain: 500 m.
4 Day 4. Mount Mezhipotoki (1,713 m), Mount Mika Mare (1,815 m)
We continue along the Ukrainian-Romanian border on the Marmarosy Ridge. The trail climbs and then drops again. Along the way we will also bag the peaks of Bendyaska and Holovacheu. Once we cross the third peak, Mount Mezhipotoki, we will see today’s resting place: the slopes of Mount Mika Mare. We set up camp and, after a short rest, take a side trip to the summit of Mika Mare. From there you get an excellent view of the Romanian Marmarosy and their peaks of Farcău and Mihăilecu.
Distance: 11 km. Elevation gain: 400 m.
5 Day 5. Korbul Pass, Mount Stoh, Radul mountain meadow
We continue along the border. Today’s traverse of the Marmarosy Ridge brings new landscapes: from Korbul Pass we will see Mount Pop-Ivan Chornohirskyi and the famous White Elephant Observatory. After lunch near the source of the Bila Tysa, we will take a side trip to Mount Stoh (1,650 m), to an old border post where Czechoslovakia, Romania and Poland once met. You can also see the Chyvchyny, another mountain range, from there. We return to our packs and continue descending. At Radul mountain meadow we will try to track down some shepherds and buy fresh bryndza from them. A little lower, in the valley of the Shybene River, we set up our tents.
Distance: 15 km. Elevation loss: 700 m.

Of course, nature comes first! In the forest, in the mountains you forget about fatigue, work and problems. And the most important thing is the attitude with which you go to the mountains and the right people next to you! In good company, you won’t be afraid of a steep climb, a stormy wind or an encounter with wild animals. If you don’t allow negativity to ruin your vacation, you will get a lot of impressions and will definitely want to come back.
I went on two trips with Oleg Boyko and two with Yuri Yurkiv. The most difficult question remains who to choose as an instructor for your next hike in the summer of 2016. It's like comparing the operas "Don Giovanni" and "Carmen", which is better, if you understand me. There is no clear answer.
