Crimean Legend - The Grave of Mamay

Mamay khanIn the Crimea, in an extreme antiquity there lived a man who wanted at any price to dominate over the whole world.

He made his home out of the town Kafa. The live of an ordinary man did'n suit him and he nursed a thought to seize Kafa. To achieve his aim Mamay began to select people thirsting for glory and easy money. When there were a great number of adherents Mamay ordered them to conceal in the town being ready for seizing and wait for his signal.

The khan was sure in success. Being intoxicated with hopes he shared his gladness with his faithful servant; who in his turn shared it with his wife. And it's an old truth that when a woman is initiated into a secret, she in order to be raised in eyes of the others, trys to divulge it Dick and Harry keeping on repeating: "Only to you". On the very first day the secret of Mamay was spread all over Kafa and reached the town-governor's ears. The guard was redoubled and residents were armed and ready for desperate opposition. Being unaware of reveaving the plot, Mamay gave a signal at a midnight and headed mutineers. But everywhere he was greeted by stones falling thick and fast and arrows raining down. Having realized that his plan was failed, the khan left his accomplices to the mercy of fate and had sheltered in his own house. Having supposed that he was in safety, Mamay began dreaming of time when he would seize Kafa and avenge for his defeat. But by that time the house was encircled. - You must die, the hard-hearted and insidious man! - yelled he armed crowd having seen Mamay. - You have disgraced our town, you have sheded our dweller's blood! You must die! And Mamay's body was run through thousands of lances... Late at evening when it became dark enough the servant had found the stuck body of his master and buried him far from the town. Soon at that place a great barrow appeared which was named by people The Grave of Mamay. Kafa - a present-day Feodosiya; Mamay - a khan from Gold-Horde. Defeated in a battle with Russion troops, he escaped to Crimea where he was killed and buried in Kafa.
