Which valleys are linked by hiking trails?
Around Göreme most valleys form one network: Rose and Red flow into each other, Love and Pigeon run nearby, and Paşabağ sits minutes from Zelve. Walking between neighbouring valleys usually takes an hour or two. Only Ihlara near Aksaray stands apart and is a separate day trip.
Where is the best sunset?
The classic sunset spots are the Red and Rose valleys, where warm light turns the tuff ridges a deep red-orange. The rim of the Red Valley (Kızılçukur) has viewpoint cafés, so people gather there about an hour before sundown. Come early, in peak season the best spots fill fast.
Why do fairy chimneys have caps?
Each chimney is a column of soft tuff topped by a block of harder rock, usually basalt. The hard cap shields the tuff directly beneath it from rain and wind while everything around slowly erodes away. That leaves a mushroom on a stalk; once the cap finally falls, the chimney erodes quickly.
When is the best time to walk the valleys?
The most comfortable months are April to June and September to October: warm but without the July-August heat, when midday on the open tuff is punishing. In summer set out at dawn or late afternoon and carry plenty of water, there is little shade in the valleys. Winter can bring snow that dusts the chimneys beautifully but makes the trails slippery.
Do you need a guide?
The popular stretches (Rose, Red, Pigeon valleys) are waymarked and easy to walk on your own with an offline map. A guide helps if you want to string several valleys into one long route, read the frescoes in the rock churches, or avoid dead ends in the tangle of trails. In the Ihlara Canyon the river itself sets the direction, so it is hard to get lost.
