FAQFrequently asked questions

What kind of castle is this and where is it located?

Nevytskyi Castle is a medieval fortress in Transcarpathia, near the village of Kamianitsa in the Uzhgorod district. Once a formidable fortress with three lines of defense, today it is a picturesque ruin on a wooded hill.

How to get there?

The most convenient from Uzhhorod is the castle just a few kilometers from the city, on the road to Perechyn. The climb up the hill on foot is short, so you won't get very tired.

How old is the castle and what happened to it?

It all began somewhere in the 12th century as an earthen fortification, the fortress is mentioned in written sources at the beginning of the 14th century. It was made a fireplace by the Druget family after 1328, and in 1644 it was destroyed by the Transylvanian prince Djordj Rakotsi.

What can be seen there?

Remains of a square dungeon, fragments of defensive walls and towers. The main tower was restored in 2019-2021, at the same time archaeologists unearthed huge stone cannonballs of the 15th century.

Any interesting stories?

There is a plaque on the castle that supposedly inspired Jules Verne to write the novel "The Castle in the Carpathians". The version is doubtful, because the writer hardly traveled at that time, but tourists like it.
