Kirtik
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Kyrtyk and where to look for it?
This is a mountain river in the North Caucasus, in Kabardino-Balkaria (Elbrusky district). Small, only about 20 km long, with a basin of about 122 km sq.
Where does it flow from and where does it flow?
Begins east of the Iryk Pass and Chatkara Mountain, in the upper reaches it is called Subashi. It flows through the gorge to the east, then turns to the south and gives its water to the Baksan River from the left bank.
What does the river valley look like?
In the middle course, the gorge is overgrown with a birch-pine forest, so the landscape here is green, not bare, rocky. Among the tributaries are Mkyara, Syltransu, Jugurtau and several others with no less tongue-in-cheek names.
Where does this water eventually go?
Kyrtyk is only the first link in a long chain: Baksan, then Malka, then Terek, and from there it all reaches the Caspian Sea.
