FAQFrequently asked questions
What is this Zemlyanychnych and where to find it?
This is a village in the east of the Biloghirsky district of Crimea, in a mountain basin of the Inner Range of the Crimean Mountains at an altitude of about 330 meters. It lies in the upper reaches of the valley of the Indol (Su-Indol) river, where it meets the valley of the Chamar stream.
Why was the village called Ortalan earlier?
Until 1945, it bore the Crimean Tatar name of Ortalan - a medieval Christian settlement founded by descendants of Goths and Alans. In the 17th century, the palaces of the Shirinsky beys stood here, and Ortalan was the center of their beylik. The current name appeared as early as 1945.
How to get here?
The village is only one kilometer south of the Simferopol-Feodosia highway, so it is easy to get there. It is about 24 km to the district center of Biloghirsk, there is a bus connection; the nearest railway station is Feodosia, 51 km away.
What is interesting to see nearby?
The nearest villages are Yelenivka 1.2 km to the north and Radisne 2.5 km to the northeast. In the village itself there is the Ortalan Jamisi Mosque, and around it - a typical foothill landscape of the Inner Range with the Indolu Valley.
Who lives here?
According to the 2001 census, the population almost equally spoke Russian (about 48%) and Crimean Tatar (about 46%), Ukrainian - a few percent. This is an echo of the deportation of the Crimean Tatars in 1944 and the subsequent return of some of the residents.
