Velikiy Kanyon
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is the Great Canyon of Crimea?
This is a gorge in the Crimean Mountains, which was formed in limestone about 1.5-2 million years ago due to water erosion. It is more than 320 m deep, about 3.5 km long, and in some places it narrows to some 3 m - not for those who are afraid of confined spaces.
Where is it and how to get there?
A canyon in the Bakhchisaray district, on the border of the Ai-Petry massif and Mount Boyka, about 5 km southeast of the village of Sokoline. A footpath deep into the gorge begins from there.
When is the best time to go there?
The second half of summer and autumn - when there is less rain and the trail is more passable. It is better not to climb there in the rain: the rockfalls are no joke here.
What to see inside?
Blue lake, Pania spring (the largest karst spring in Crimea), the famous Bath of Youth (Lake Kara-Gol), the Auzun-Uzen river with waterfalls up to 3-4 m and more than 150 stone cauldrons washed by water.
Can you swim there?
Those who want to dive into the Bath of Youth, but keep in mind: the water in the local rivers does not heat up above +11 degrees. Youth is youth, and a tooth does not fall on a tooth.
