Morskie Oko
FAQFrequently asked questions
What kind of lake is this and where is it?
Morske Oko is a glacial lake in the Polish Tatras, in the Rybny stream valley, at an altitude of about 1,395 meters. It lies in the Tatra National Park, surrounded by peaks rising almost a kilometer above the water.
How big and deep is it?
The area is about 35 hectares, the length is almost 862 meters, the width - under 568. The maximum depth is 50.8 meters, so for a mountain lake it is quite a hole.
How to get there?
An asphalt road 8.5 km long leads from the Palenica-Bialchanska parking lot, but you can go there by private car. It can be reached on foot or by footpaths - from one and a half to three and a half hours, depending on the route.
When is the best time to come?
The lake usually freezes in November and melts in May. If you want to see water, not ice, plan your visit in the warmer months.
What is it famous for?
Journalists of The Wall Street Journal included it in the top five most beautiful lakes in the world. Trout naturally live in the water, and in 2021, a beaver was recorded here for the first time - however, the poor fellow did not survive the attempt to cross the mountains.
