Jökulsárlón
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Jökulsárlón?
This is Iceland's largest glacial lagoon on the southern edge of Vatnajökull National Park. Icebergs breaking off from the Breidamerkurjökull glacier float on the water - some are under 30 meters high.
How deep is this lagoon?
Since 2009, Jökulsárlón is the deepest lake in Iceland: more than 284 meters. What is interesting is that the reservoir is still quite young - it was formed only around 1934-35, when the glacier began to retreat.
How to get there?
The lagoon lies just off the ring road (Route 1), about 75 km west of the town of Hebn. It is difficult to drive past it and not stop.
What to see nearby?
Across the road is a black sandy beach nicknamed Diamond Beach: on it lie transparent blocks of ice that look like scattered diamonds. Seals roam the lagoon itself, and arctic terns flock to it in the summer.
Can you ride on the water?
Yes, since 1985, tourists have been transported here on boats and amphibians, and in winter they are taken to ice caves. By the way, the lagoon managed to light up in two James Bond films and in Tomb Raider and Batman Begins.
