Svaneti Range
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is the Svaneti ridge and where is it in general?
This is a mountain range in northwestern Georgia, the leading ridge of the southern slope of the Greater Caucasus. It stretches for about 85 km, so you won't be able to get around it all in one hike.
What is the highest point here?
Mount Lyla, 4008 meters. A respectable number that should be approached with preparation, not with the enthusiasm of a day off.
Is there a lot of snow and ice here?
Yes. Glaciers occupy about 30 km², and snow lies on the slopes from 2,600 meters. Warm shoes are not a whim, but a necessity.
What is interesting to see besides the mountains themselves?
The ridge divides areas with ancient architecture: Svan towers of the IX-XII centuries and stone Orthodox churches have survived here. The stone has survived here for more than one century.
What grows on slopes?
Beech, spruce and fir forests are below, and subalpine and alpine plants begin above. The picture simply changes with height.
