Polonynas of the Carpathians

Polonynas are the high grassy pastures of the Carpathians, long used for grazing livestock and haymaking. In summer the meadows bloom, shepherds’ huts smoke and the views open for tens of kilometres. Well-known ones include Runa, Rushchyna and Stremcheska. Below are a map, the list of polonynas and tours across them.

FAQ

What is a polonyna?

A polonyna is a treeless grassy area high in the mountains where flocks graze in summer. It is both a natural landscape and an old Hutsul herding tradition.

When is livestock grazed on the polonynas?

Traditionally from May (the "polonyna procession" festival) to September. Summer is when you can see the huts and taste fresh brynza cheese.

Are the polonynas hard to hike?

Mostly no: the gentle grassy ridges are easy walking and good for family hikes. The main challenge is the weather - open polonynas offer no shelter from wind or storms.
