Waterfalls of the Carpathians

The mountain waterfalls of the Carpathians range from the cascading Hoverla falls at the source of the Prut to the legendary Shypit near Pylypets. Most are low but scenic; they run fullest in spring during snowmelt, and in winter some freeze into curtains of ice. Below are a map, a list and a summary table of height and location; linked names lead to each waterfall’s page.

FAQ

Which Carpathian waterfall is the tallest?

Formally the Hoverla (Prut) waterfall at the source of the Prut: its cascades add up to 80 m. But that is a long chain of low steps rather than one dramatic drop. The best-known waterfall, though, is Shypit.

When are the waterfalls at their fullest?

In spring during snowmelt (April-May) and after heavy rain. In summer many of them shrink noticeably.

Do the waterfalls freeze in winter?

Yes, part of the cascades turns into curtains of ice; the flow rarely stops completely, but it is weaker in winter.

Which waterfall is easiest to visit?

Probiy in the centre of Yaremche is right by the road. Shypit is a short walk from Pylypets village, with a ski lift as the landmark.

Is it safe to get close?

The rocks by the water are slippery and the current is deceptively strong (especially at Probiy). Admire them from the built viewpoints and stay off the wet boulders.
