Castle Sent-Miklosh
FAQFrequently asked questions
What kind of castle is this and where is it?
The castle of Saint Miklos (aka Chinadiyivskyi) is located in the village of Chinadiyovo near Mukachevo in Transcarpathia. A stone structure with two corner towers and walls about a meter thick - they were clearly built for more than one season.
How old is it and who built it?
The castle itself was built in the 14th century, it is attributed to Baron Perena, although the settlement here is mentioned as early as 1214. Later, it was owned by the Counts of Telegdi, Princess Ilona Zrini, and in 1728 Emperor Charles VI gave the castle to the Schönborn family.
Is it true that there is a creepy legend here?
Yes. During the restoration in 1839, a bricked-up skeleton was found in the wall - an echo of the medieval custom of bricking up a living person so that the walls would hold better. The version is questionable from the engineering point of view, but it adds to the atmosphere.
Can we come inside?
Yes. Since 2001, the castle has been owned by the artist Yosif Bartosz and his wife Tatiana. The first floor has been restored, there are exhibitions of Celtic and Scythian cultures, and regular art events are held.
What should a traveler see here?
The very walls and towers of the 14th century, the restored first floor with exhibitions, and also the opportunity to attend one of the art events - you should check the schedule in advance on the website stmiklos.com.
