FAQFrequently asked questions

What is Kara-Tau and what is its height?

This is a mountain massif as part of the Main Range of the Crimean Mountains, which lies on the Karabi Yail. The highest point is Mount Tai-Koba, 1259 meters.

Where is it located and how to get there?

Massif in the Simferopol district, in the southwestern part of the Karabi Yayla. People usually go up here from the villages around the plateau - it is most convenient to enter from the side of Yaila, because the plateau itself is flat and easy to walk on.

What is interesting to see here?

The plateau is entirely in karst forms - watering holes, karst fields and caves, including Terpi-Koba under the very top of Tai-Koba. A beech forest has survived on the northern slope, so there are not bare trees everywhere.

Why is the massif guarded?

Part of Kara-Tau has the status of a natural monument with an area of 100 hectares. Тут переважає гірсько-луго-степова рослинність - те, заради чого ботаніки сюди й тягнуться.

Where did the name Kara-Tau come from?

From the Turkic languages it is translated as black mountains. The name is common throughout the region, so Kara-Tau is not alone in Crimea - this particular one sits on Karabi-yayl.
