Karabi
Karabi Yayla is the largest limestone Yayla of the Crimean Mountains, about 129 square meters. km of almost flat, treeless plateau. The highest point, Tai-Koba, holds 1262 meters, and the rest of the space is so bare and monotonous that it is no easier to navigate here than in a clear field.
This is a solid karst: more than 50 caves, countless watering holes and sinkholes, among them Soldatskaya mine, the deepest cave in Ukraine. At one time, Soviet engineers even tested a lunar rover here, because the terrain is truly alien. You should look not only around, but also under your feet.
It is more comfortable to walk from late spring to early autumn. There is no shade on the plateau, there is no hiding from the wind and sun, there are few landmarks, so a map, a supply of water and a sober calculation of strength are not a whim, but a necessity.
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Karabi and why is it interesting?
This is the largest limestone yayla (plateau) of the Crimean Mountains - about 129 square meters. km of almost level forestless space. The highest point is Tai-Koba, 1262 m.
Why are there so many holes in the ground?
Karabi is a solid karst: more than 50 caves and countless watering holes and sinkholes. This is also the Soldier Mine, the deepest cave in Ukraine, so look carefully under your feet.
Is it true that they chased the moonwalk here?
Yes. In Soviet times, the topography of the plateau resembled the lunar surface so much that it was used for testing the lunar rover. The landscape is truly alien.
What grows there?
The plateau itself is a meadow-steppe plain without forest, with rare endemics and medicinal herbs. But the slopes of Kara-Tau are covered with an old beech forest.
When is it better to go and what to prepare for?
The most comfortable is the warm season, from late spring to early autumn. There is almost no shade on the bare plateau, nor are there landmarks, so take water, a map and don't expect to hide from the sun or wind.
