Kala Patthar
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Kala Pattar and why climb there?
This is a peak about 5644 m high in the Khumbu Himalayan region, formally the southern spur of Mount Pumori. They come here not for the mountain itself, but for the view: from here Jomolungma can be seen from the foot to the top.
What can be seen from the top?
In addition to Everest itself, there are nearby Nuptse, Lhotse and Changze, and the Khumbu glacier creeps below. Actually, they go up there for the sake of this panorama.
How to get to the top?
From Gorakshep (5164 m), the ascent takes about 1.5-2 hours, and if you start from Lobuche (4940 m), allow 3.5-5 hours. Technically, it is not inclined, but the height is indicated.
Is this climb difficult?
Kala-Pattar is appreciated precisely for its relative lightness - no special mountaineering equipment is needed. The main challenge here is not the rocks, but the 5.5 km altitude and rarefied air, so acclimatization is a must.
What is an unusual fact here?
Since 2011, the world's highest webcam has been operating at the top, monitoring Jomolungma. That is, not only your camera looks at Everest from here.
