Dingboche
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Dingboche and at what altitude is it?
This is a Sherpa village in the Khumbu region of northeastern Nepal, sitting at an altitude of 4,410 meters. About 200 people live here, and their main job is to keep yaks and serve the trekkers who wander towards Everest.
How to get there?
Only on foot - there are no roads to the village, only paths. Dingboche lies between Namche Bazaar and Tengboche on the classic Khumbu trekking routes, so yaks and mules, not trucks, haul goods here.
When is the best time to go there?
Spring (March-April) and autumn (October-November) - the mountains can be seen best, and the cold is not yet unbearable. In summer (July-August), everything is flooded by monsoon rains, and in winter the temperature rarely rises above zero.
Why do trackers even stop here?
Dingboche is a popular point of acclimatization before climbing to higher altitudes. Unlike neighboring Pheriche, it is sunnier and less exposed to icy winds, so it is more pleasant to wait and get used to the altitude.
What is the climate like here?
Tundra (according to Köppen - ET): it is almost always frosty in winter, about 520 mm of precipitation falls per year, and the lion's share of it falls on the monsoon in July-August. That is, it is not worth relaxing even in the summer.
