Alps glaciers face record melt after Himalayan disaster
Nepal context. In late August 2026, a torrent of water, mud and debris surged more than 170 km from southwest Tibet into central Nepal, killing hundreds of people according to early reports. Authorities and scientists link the disaster to a collapse of ice and bedrock on Langtang Lirung (Nepal–Tibet border): the ground beneath the glacier gave way and pulled the ice down with it. Glaciologist Olaf Eisen (Alfred Wegener Institute) estimates the avalanche volume was 10–20 times larger than the tragedy at Blatten, Switzerland, in May 2025.
Record melt in the Alps
Summer 2026 is putting European glaciers on course for record losses. GLAMOS and ETH Zurich monitoring show Switzerland’s Glacier Loss Day — when all winter snow is gone and ice loss begins — arrived on 29 June, far earlier than the usual late-September date. Winter snow was 25 % below the 2010–2020 average.
More than 9 metres of ice have melted from the surface of the Rhône glacier; it has lost roughly 30 million tonnes of ice this season. Melt has crept above 3,100 m — elevations where summer melt rarely reached in past decades. Andreas Bauder (ETH Zurich) and Rainer Prinz (University of Innsbruck) expect 2026 to beat or come close to the 2022 record, when another 6 % of Alpine glacier ice disappeared. About 1,000 Swiss glaciers have vanished since 1850; media warn that dozens more could go this summer.
Trail and route risks
Olaf Eisen notes that Europe is among the fastest-warming continents; retreating glaciers and thawing permafrost are destabilising high mountains. The most exposed band lies at roughly 2,500–3,000 m in France, Italy, Austria and Switzerland — especially combined with heatwaves or heavy rain.
On Weisshorn East, three small glacier collapses were recorded earlier in the week; hiking and cycling routes near Randa were closed (potentially hundreds of thousands of cubic metres at risk). In May 2025, a rock-and-ice collapse destroyed Blatten (one fatality). In 2022, a block broke off Italy’s Marmolada glacier, killing 11 climbers.
For Alpine hikers. Check local trail closures (commune, canton, park), thunderstorm and heat forecasts; on glacier terrain and beneath steep slopes with melting ice, rockfall and ice-avalanche risk is rising. A Nepal-scale event in the Alps is considered unlikely, but the trend is clear: more mountain instability.
