Synevyrska Polyana

Synevyrska Polyana is the mountain village in the Khust district of Zakarpattia where the acquaintance with Lake Sinevir usually begins. It stretches along the Tereblya river, among wooded slopes, and serves as the unofficial capital of this corner of the National Park.

For a traveller, Polyana is valuable above all as a convenient base. From here it is easy to make radial trips to the lake, the bear centre, the museum of forestry and rafting, and further on to Kolochava or the Shypit waterfall, returning each evening to the warmth of a guesthouse. There is accommodation for every taste and budget here, from modest village rooms to hotels with a pool, so staying on for a few days is no problem.

In summer people go hiking in the mountains, ride bikes and fish on the mountain rivers, while in winter a small ski area operates. In short, it is a quiet place, but by no means a dull one.

FAQFrequently asked questions

Where can you stay and how much does it cost?
The choice is wide: village guesthouses, eco-lodges and hotels, some with a pool. Prices depend on the season and the level of comfort, with the highest rates in winter and on long weekends, so for the peak it is worth booking in advance.
What is convenient to visit from here?
Lake Sinevir, the brown bear rehabilitation centre, the museum of forestry and rafting, and a little further on Kolochava with its open-air museum and narrow-gauge railway, and the Shypit waterfall.
How do you get there?
By car via Mizhhirya, or by public transport by bus to Synevyrska Polyana or Mizhhirya with changes. The nearest large cities are Khust, Mukachevo and Uzhhorod.
When should you go?
In summer and autumn for the views and hiking, in winter for the snow and skiing. Mountain roads in winter call for caution and a well-prepared car.
What is there to do in winter?
Ski on the small local lift, walk through the snow-covered park and drive out to the lake, which looks especially magical in the snow.
