Castle Palanok
FAQFrequently asked questions
What kind of castle is this and where is it located?
This is a medieval fortress in Mukachevo in Zakarpattia, sitting on a 68-meter volcanic hill. From there you can see the city like in the palm of your hand - in fact, that's why it was once put there.
Could it really be that no one could take it?
In 1241, the 60,000-strong army of Khan Batia razed Mukachevo to the ground, but the castle was never conquered. The walls turned out to be more stubborn than the Mongols.
What's inside worth checking out?
Three defensive terraces, fourteen towers and a well 85 meters deep, which Prince Koryatovych ordered to be hollowed out of the rock. Near the well, they still tell a legend about a bet with the devil - believe it or not, decide for yourself.
Is there a museum here?
Yes, the castle now houses a historical museum. Once upon a time, it was not so comfortable here: for more than a hundred years, the fortress served as an Austrian political prison, through which more than 20 thousand prisoners passed.
What interesting fact will be remembered for sure?
In 1805-1806, the crown of Hungary was hidden in the castle. And a linden tree grows in the yard, which was planted in 1848 in honor of the release of political prisoners - the so-called Tree of Freedom.
