FAQ
Why is the massif called Chornohora?
The common explanation is the dark spruce forests on its slopes, which make the ridge look almost black from afar.
How do you get to Chornohora?
The most popular gateway is Vorokhta to the Zaroslyak base (and on to Hoverla); also from Yasinia, Kvasy, Dzembronia and Bystrets. Trains and buses reach Vorokhta and Yasinia, then local transport or a transfer.
What is the massif made of (geology)?
It is Carpathian flysch - hard sandstones with layers of soft shale. Sharp cliffs are few; instead it has glacial cirques with lakes (Nesamovyte, Brebeneskul) carved during the Ice Age.
How is Chornohora different from other ridges?
It is Ukraine’s highest massif: nine of the ten highest Carpathian peaks and all six 2000ers are here. Unlike the rocky Gorgany, Chornohora has broad grassy meadows (polonynas) and a high treeline.
Which rivers rise in Chornohora?
The Prut (with the Hoverla waterfall), the Chorna Tysa and the Chornyi Cheremosh all rise here. The main ridge is the watershed between the Prut and the Tysa; all belong to the Danube basin.
What about the flora and fauna?
Over 700 plant species, dozens Red-listed; the meadows carry alpine rhododendron (the "chervona ruta"). Wildlife includes brown bear, lynx, golden eagle and snow vole.
Is it a protected reserve? Is there an entry fee?
Part of Chornohora lies in the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve (access by permit) and part in the Carpathian National Park. On popular routes, notably Hoverla, the park charges a recreation fee; camping is only at designated sites.
