Mynzhylky mountain plateau
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Mynzhilyki and where is it?
This is a mountain plateau in Zailiyskyi Alatau, about 28 km south of Almaty (Kazakhstan), near the source of the Little Almatynka River. The name is translated from Kazakh as a thousand mares - horses once grazed here.
What is the height there?
The highest point reaches about 3000 m. It is a wide, flat valley about 4 km long with steep slopes, surrounded by glaciers and moraine mounds of Tuyuksu.
When is the best time to go?
The most comfortable season is from May to October. In winter and spring after snowfall, the slopes are avalanche-dangerous, so don't climb there without reason.
What to see and do there?
The plateau is a base for trekking and climbing: routes to nearby peaks and passes diverge from here, and there are mountain shelters. There is a weather station and an anti-flood dam nearby.
Any interesting facts?
The hydrometeorological station has been operating here since 1936. The place is part of the Ile-Alatau National Park, and the climate is harsh - about 237 snowy days a year and the average temperature is below zero.
