Korea: autumn peak in mountain rescues
Chosunbiz, citing the National Fire Agency, reports that on 12 October 2026 authorities urged hikers to follow safety rules as autumn foliage season raises mountain-accident risk.
Over 2023–2025 there were 30,583 mountain rescue cases nationwide; 12.4% fell in October — the year’s highest monthly share. Leading causes: slips and falls 9,806 (32.1%), distress/searches 8,954 (29.3%), and medical issues (seizures, hypothermia and other illness) 3,149 (10.3%).
The agency’s “seven safety rules”: check weather and avoid hiking alone; pick a route that matches fitness that day; start early and descend before sunset; warm up lightly; carry a light outer layer for temperature swings; stay on designated trails; do not hike under the influence of alcohol.
In an emergency or if lost, call 119 using national grid markers, trail location signs or landmarks; then use trail first-aid kits, keep warm and wait. Thirty-four firefighting helicopters remain on standby. The report illustrates autumn Bukhansan near Seoul.
