Scientific Centre «Observatory»
The Scientific Centre «Observatory» is the restored interwar building on Pip Ivan Chornohirskyi (2028 m), known as the «White Elephant». Since 27 August 2026 it hosts the International Centre for Shared Scientific Equipment (Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University and the University of Warsaw): a dome telescope plus meteorology, climate and Chornohora ecology work.
For hikers: this is not a museum and not a mountain hut. Labs and living quarters are closed to casual visits. Part of the building is the Yavirnytske / Chornohora mountain rescue post of Ukraine's State Emergency Service (24/7 duty). In bad weather rescuers may offer emergency shelter — not a booked overnight stay.
The summit is reached on Carpathian National Nature Park trails (Dzembronya, Shybene and others). Pip Ivan lies in the ≈5 km border strip from Romania: you need a State Border Guard permit for the relevant detachment, ID, and for men aged 18–60 a military registration document. Confirm the regime before you go.
FAQFrequently asked questions
Can I go inside the observatory like a museum?
No. Laboratories and living quarters are closed to casual visitors: this is a science facility and a rescue zone, not a tour museum.
Is there a tourist hut or overnight stay?
No. In bad weather the SES rescue post may offer emergency shelter, but it is not a mountain hut and not for planned overnight stays.
What operates in the building now?
An international science centre (telescope, weather and ecology work) and a 24/7 SES mountain rescue post. Equipment is for research teams under agreement, not for walk-in visitors.
Do I need a permit to climb Pip Ivan?
Yes — the summit is in the border strip. Apply to the State Border Guard in advance (Verkhovyna / Dzembronya side — Chernivtsi detachment; Zakarpattia side — the relevant Zakarpattia detachment). Bring ID and, for men aged 18–60, a military registration document.
