What does Outdoor mean?
The name for this site was invented back in those distant days when we were sure that our main clients would be foreigners. That is why we chose an option that any English-speaking visitor would understand: Outdoor Ukraine (pronounced “Outdoor Ukraine”). Ukraine is clear enough — it is Ukraine. But what does Outdoor mean?
If translated literally, it comes out as “outside the door”. In English, the word refers to everything that happens outside, in the fresh air (open air). There is outdoor advertising (or, as we would say, “outdoor ads”), outdoor sport (outside the gym) and outdoor clothing (for active recreation). And, of course, tourism — mountain, hiking, cycling, motorcycling and water-based — and everything connected with it belongs in the “outside the door” category. In other words, Outdoor is just about us — wandering tourists and experienced nature lovers.
It is worth mentioning that folk wisdom has come up with a simpler and more accessible translation of the word Outdoor: “Avtodor”. But you cannot argue with the people. So when the question “Is this Avtodor Ukraine?” comes through the telephone receiver, I answer: “Yes!”
