Peru closes the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
Today, 19 August, Peru temporarily closed tourist access to the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Until further notice.
Since the night of 17 August, unusual downpours have hit the trail. Meteorologists link them to a high-altitude depression (DANA). In 11 sectors there are already landslides, swollen streams, flooded camps, collapsed toilets, damaged footbridges and eroded soil. Among them are classic points on the route: Wayllabamba, Phuyupatamarka, Wiñaywayna.
Groups that entered on Tuesday were ordered to turn back. Exit alternatives via km 104 (Chachabamba) and km 106 (Choquesuysuy) are under review. A safety decision is due by 22 August. If the weather does not ease, visits will be rescheduled or tickets refunded.
This is the trail, not necessarily the citadel itself. If you are going to the ruins by train, check DDC Cusco and Peru’s Ministry of Culture channels separately.
