Train: Ukrainian railways

Train: Ukrainian railways

Between Ukrainian cities you travel by train. There are no scheduled passenger flights. That is covered in Domestic flights in Ukraine. Overnight trains take longer than an Intercity+, and they run through the year.

The network

Ukrzaliznytsia describes more than 22,000 kilometres of track. The main gauge is 1,520 mm. It links most regional capitals. The fare for a seat is the same with a Ukrainian passport and with a foreign one.

Tickets

Buy them at booking.uz.gov.ua, in the Ukrzaliznytsia app and at station ticket offices. For most long-distance trains the sale opens 20 days before departure, at 08:00. For Intercity trains the window is shorter, often 10 days. On some routes closer to the fighting the sale opens later as well. The carrier's site shows the date.

A ticket can be bought from abroad. On some trains Ukrainian passengers confirm their identity through Diia, and foreign passengers use a separate check at services.uz.gov.ua/ticket-foreigners. A station office sells tickets too. Have your passport when you board.

Carriages

A sleeper has an SV compartment for two and a coupe for four. Platzkart is open: berths in doorless bays and side berths along the corridor. An Intercity+ is a seated train, not a sleeper. Bedding on an overnight train comes from the conductor. The price is posted on the train and it changes.

Crimea

Ukrzaliznytsia does not run a train to Crimea. Crimea and Sevastopol are temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation. For now it is not a place for tourism.
