Rafting the Enchanted Desna (2 days)
Two days on catamarans on the Desna near Kyiv: Saturday from Lisova metro to the town of Litky, an unhurried paddle with stops on sandbars, a night in tents, Sunday to the Desna mouth and back into the city. The programme is about 35 km of calm lowland water. Weather can shift the clock - then the guide adjusts the stops.
The Desna is the Dnipro's longest tributary. Enchanted Desna is how Oleksandr Dovzhenko named a childhood on this river. Litky is under an hour from Kyiv: oak woods, willow thickets, floodplain meadows and sandbars. This is not white water, but a quiet paddle with a swim whenever you want one.
Day by dayItinerary
1 Day 1. Kyiv, Litky, paddle and night on the Desna
Saturday. Around 9:00 a chartered bus leaves from Lisova metro. Around 10:00 we reach the town of Litky in Kyiv region. We assemble the catamarans, go through a safety briefing and push off.
The day is unhurried: we watch the banks and stop to swim off the sandbars. Lunch is on the river (around 13:00-14:00 on the programme). After lunch, anyone who wants to can drop into a riverside kolyba cafe - not a required excursion, just a pause if it is still open and there is time.
Towards evening we pitch the tent camp. Dinner, a fire, the river next to us. Tents, sleeping bags and mats come with the tour.
2 Day 2. Paddle to the Desna mouth and return to Kyiv
Sunday. After breakfast we are back on the water (around 10:00). Swim stops as wanted. Lunch on the bank, then we paddle to the Desna mouth, where it meets the Dnipro above Kyiv.
We pack the catamarans, board the bus (around 17:00 on the programme) and ride to a Kyiv metro station (arrival around 18:00). The guide names the finish stop: the old programme only said metro station.
