Gergetskiy lodovik
The Herget glacier slides down the southeastern slope of Kazbek, in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region of Georgia. This is a valley glacier about 7 km long, and it is from its snow that the Chheri River begins its journey.
The landmark for the traveler is the village of Gergeti and the famous Trinity Church above it: from here, the trails to Kazbek start, which also lead to the glacier. The tongue of the ice slides up to the mark of 2,900 meters, but the road there is already a serious highland, not for slippers.
It is interesting that most of the glacier has settled in the old, blurred volcanic caldera - the ice settled simply in the remains of an ancient volcano. And on the left edge, the weather station building from 1933 is still standing, historic, although it has long been without regular meteorologists.
